More than 600 athletes 50 and older from around the globe will descend on Seattle this weekend for the Northwest Senior Games.
Events are scheduled for the multisport games today through Sunday, with more than 15 sports in Seattle, Bellevue, Mercer Island, Kirkland, Redmond and Shoreline.
An awards banquet is scheduled Saturday at Mercer Island Community Center at 5 p.m.

• Mary Whipple, former University of Washington coxswain from Sacramento, was named "athlete of the month" by the international rowing federation, FISA. Whipple coxed the USA women's eight to victory last week in the Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland.
• Nancy Harvey of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, won the Thriftway Washington State Women's Open this week at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club in Federal Way. Harvey, a former LPGA Tour member, shot 76-71-147 to win $4,000 and finish four strokes in front. Jordan Allyne of Bellevue was low amateur with a two-day total of 166 on the par-72 course.
