One-day shrimp fishery opens Wednesday

A portion of Central Puget [Marine Catch Area 10] will reopen for spot shrimp fishing Wednesday from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. only.
State Fish and Wildlife estimates that enough remains in the catch quota to open the shrimp fishery for one more day, but the highly popular Elliott Bay area [east of a line from West Point to Alki Point] will be closed during this brief opener.
Hood Canal is also open Wednesday for spot shrimp, and while effort decreased this past Saturday the catch rate rose from 13.9 pounds per boat this year compared to 13.2 last year.
So far, the total season catch of spot shrimp in Hood Canal is 35,867 pounds, leaving 49,133 pounds in the sport quota. Judging by the decrease in effort and the sheer amount left in the quota it looks like more days on Hood Canal are possible.
State Fish and Wildlife will review the catches in Hood Canal after tomorrow to determine if enough remains to schedule more openings.
Other areas already closed for shrimp are northern Puget Sound [Area 9], south central Puget Sound [Area 11] and the entire eastern side of Whidbey Island including Saratoga Passage [Areas 8-1 and 8-2].
