The Detroit Red Wings celebrated the 80th birthday of "Mr. Hockey" with a ceremony before Sunday's game against the Nashville Predators.

Gordie Howe, who turns 80 today, was presented with a framed No. 17 jersey — his number his rookie year before he got No. 9 his second season. He also was presented with a leather jacket; when he signed, part of his bonus was a leather Red Wings jacket.

The Red Wings also gave Howe a 48-inch high-definition television.

"I've been treated like an angel," Howe said after the ceremony.

The Hall of Famer played for Detroit from 1946 to 1971 in a career that finally concluded in 1980 at age 54.

Howe's 801 NHL goals are second to only Wayne Gretzky, and his 1,850 points have only been surpassed by Gretzky and Mark Messier.
