U.S. women take Algarve Cup: The United States won the Algarve Cup for the fifth time, beating Denmark 2-0 in Wednesday's final on goals by Kristine Lilly and Carli Lloyd in Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Portugal.
Lilly scored in the 12th minute for her 119th international goal. Lloyd scored her fourth goal in four games from 30 yards in the 51st minute.
U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo, a former Washington Husky from Richland, made three saves during the shutout.
Lloyd was the top scorer at the tournament and was selected Most Valuable Player.
Chelsea beats Manchester City to cut gap: Chelsea beat Manchester City 1-0 to cut its deficit to six points behind first-place Manchester United in the English Premier League. Arsenal won 1-0 over Aston Villa and moved ahead of Liverpool into third place.
Tottenham advances in UEFA Cup: Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup, beating Braga 3-2 and winning the home-and-home series on a 6-4 aggregate score.
Germany's Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen also advanced along with Spain's Osasuna.
UEFA suspends Navarro for seven months: Valencia defender David Navarro was suspended for seven months for his part in last week's Champions League brawl with Inter Milan — one of the harshest penalties handed out by European soccer's governing body.
Five other players were also suspended by UEFA for between two and six Champions League matches, while each team was fined $204,000.

France Jr. hospitalized in Daytona: Former NASCAR chairman Bill France Jr., 73, was hospitalized at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. His condition was not known.
High schools
Council votes to ban metal bats in NYC: New York City's legislators voted 40-6 to ban metal bats for high-school teams, sending the measure to mayor Michael Bloomberg, who isn't sure whether he will sign the legislation.
Skiing
Mancuso loses ground: American Julia Mancuso finished fifth in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, failing to reach the podium for only the second time in the past seven downhill races. The result dropped her further behind Marlies Schild in the race for the overall crown.
Mancuso also trails two other Austrians, Renate Goetschl and Nicole Hosp. Goetschl won the race, with Schild second for her best downhill result.
In the men's downhill, Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal won, with American Ted Ligety finishing a career-best fourth. Bode Miller was ninth and was ousted from the chase for the overall title. Svindal gained on Austria's Benjamin Raich in the overall standings.
Angerer clinches men's title: Borre Nass of Norway and Virpi Kuitunen of Finland won World Cup cross-country sprint races in Drammen, Norway, and Tobias Angerer of Germany clinched the overall title despite not competing.

Murray reaches quarterfinals: Briton Andy Murray upended fourth-seeded Nicolay Davydenko of Russia 7-6, 6-4 in the fourth round of the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, Calif.

Tapia's condition upgraded to fair: The condition of five-time world champion Johnny Tapia, 40, was upgraded to fair as he begins to recover in Albuquerque, N.M., from an apparent cocaine overdose.
Woods to defend title: Clinton Woods will defend his IBF light-heavyweight title against Julio Gonzalez in Las Vegas on June 23.

Kolobnev wins third stage: Russia's Alexandr Kolobnev won the third stage of the Paris-Nice race in Maurs la Jolie, France, and Italy's Franco Pellizotti kept the overall lead.
