State lawmakers are weighing legislation this session that would require health insurance to cover psychiatric disorders on an equal basis with other illnesses.

The House of Representatives passed its mental-health parity measure on Jan. 28. The proposed legislation awaits action in the Senate.

Fiscal-impact estimates vary, as do views on the need for the changes embodied in House Bill 1154 and Senate Bill 5450. Two opposing opinions:

Pro: End discrimination against the mentally ill End discrimination against the mentally ill

Con: Why waste money, endanger civil liberties?
