Olympics | Roster set for men's soccer
Selecting the Olympic squad was tricky because the Beijing Games overlap with World Cup qualifying for the U.S. team.
Freddy Adu, Jozy Altidore and Michael Bradley will lead the U.S. men's soccer team into the Beijing Olympics.
Selecting the Olympic squad was tricky because the Beijing Games overlap with World Cup qualifying for the U.S. team.
"We're trying to accommodate the Olympic team, but we need to also keep in mind it's an important time for the senior team," coach Peter Nowak said on a conference call. "We need to make sure we field two competitive teams."
The Americans open Olympic play Aug. 7 against Japan.
The U.S. faces Guatemala in World Cup qualifying Aug. 20. The Olympic semifinals are Aug. 19.
Wambach's surgery a success
SAN DIEGO — U.S. soccer star Abby Wambach had surgery to repair a broken left leg that will keep her out of the Olympics.
The team's leading scorer had a titanium rod inserted in her lower left leg during a one-hour operation. She can begin full weight-bearing activities on the leg in five to six weeks.
Wambach, 28, broke her tibia and fibula in the team's final tuneup Wednesday against Brazil, and is expected to be sidelined about 12 weeks. The U.S. begins defense of the gold medal on Aug. 6 against Norway.
"I'm excited to watch them and cheer them on during this challenge they've been presented with," Wambach said.
Notes
• Laura Wilkinson and diving partner Jessica Livingston have asked an arbitrator to overturn a decision not to have them compete in synchronized platform at the Beijing Games, according to a report.
Haley Ishimatsu and Mary Beth Dunnichay, both 15, were named to the U.S. team after they split four competitions with Wilkinson and Livingston at a selection camp earlier this month in Knoxville, Tenn.
• Yao Ming marked his return from a stress fracture that ended his NBA season early with 11 points in just over 12 minutes for the Chinese national team in an Olympic warmup against a Serbian squad in Hangzhou.
