Gymnast Morgan Hamm's spot secure

USA Gymnastics said Wednesday that a warning Hamm received earlier this month for getting a prescribed anti-inflammatory shot without proper clearance from anti-doping authorities did not affect his qualification to the team.

INDIANAPOLIS — Morgan Hamm's place on the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team is safe.

USA Gymnastics said Wednesday that a warning Hamm received earlier this month for getting a prescribed anti-inflammatory shot without proper clearance from anti-doping authorities did not affect his qualification to the team.

"It's really a relief," Hamm said. "Now I can concentrate on gymnastics without having any other distractions."

As part of his punishment, Hamm's results from the second day of the national championships — the day of his positive test — were thrown out.

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency announced July 3 it had given Hamm a warning for his May 24 positive test for glucocorticosteroid, a cortisone-like anti-inflammatory. The drug is allowed if an athlete gets a therapeutic-use exemption, but Hamm had failed to do that.

Durant, Green selected

Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant and No. 1 draft pick Derrick Rose were among the players chosen for the select-team roster that will scrimmage against the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team next week.

Ten players were picked for the team, which will be coached again by Oklahoma City's P.J. Carlesimo. Also selected was Durant's teammate with the Sonics last season, Jeff Green, and Detroit guard Rodney Stuckey from Kentwood High School and Eastern Washington.

Notes

• Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius fell short of the 400-meter qualifying time he needed to make the Olympics, though the personal-best time he ran in Lucerne, Switzerland, could still get him to Beijing in the relay. The 21-year-old South African finished third in his heat in 46.25 seconds. The Olympic individual qualifying standard is 45.55.

Dirk Nowitzki scored a tournament-high 35 points to lead Germany to an 89-71 victory over New Zealand at a qualifying basketball tournament in Athens, Greece, for the Beijing Olympics. Canada rebounded from its opening loss against Slovenia and stunned South Korea with a 14-0 run over the last 2:42 to win 79-77 and advance to the quarterfinals.

• USA Boxing reinstated Luis Yanez to the Olympic team, more than two weeks after the light flyweight was kicked off the Beijing roster for missing workouts.
