Ralph Edwards, 92, host on radio and TV

Los Angeles Times

HOLLYWOOD — Ralph Edwards, the pioneer radio and television host and producer who created "Truth or Consequences" and the long-running "This Is Your Life," died Wednesday. He was 92.

Mr. Edwards, a three-time Emmy Award winner whose broadcasting career began on radio in 1929, died in his sleep at his West Hollywood home, publicist Laura Calliari said.

Over the years, Mr. Edwards produced more than 20 television shows, including "It Could Be You," "Place the Face," "$100,000 Name That Tune" and "The Cross-Wits." His company continues to co-produce "The People's Court."

Mr. Edwards created "Truth or Consequences" for radio in 1940. As host, he asked contestants silly, generally tricky questions and made them "pay" the consequences for answering incorrectly by performing unusual stunts.

But the role for which he will be best remembered is as the host of "This Is Your Life," whose surprised subjects had their life stories recounted by Mr. Edwards, punctuated by the voices of long-lost friends and relatives, who then joined Mr. Edwards and the honored guest on stage.
