Gay-marriage snub
The problem is religion and ego, not love
In the article, “Snub claim a sign of discord among gay-marriage foes,” reporter Lornet Turnbull reported that two separate organizations attempting to block same-gender marriage legislation are fighting over which one should lead the charge [NWTuesday, Feb. 21].
I couldn’t be more pleased.
The dissension among proponents of Initiative 1192 and Referendum 74 demonstrates that the real motivations for taking away an individual’s inherent right to marry are not values or beliefs, but rather power and ego.
If they truly cared about the “sanctity of marriage” they would find a way to work together in order to achieve a common goal — obviously it’s not clear what that goal is.
While it’s difficult to argue with a cultural frame that is inherently religious in context, I would encourage opponents of same-gender marriage to step outside of the box and think about marriage in terms of love, not religion.
I mean, we’re not going anywhere, so why not try to accept us?
