Bill Gates' opinion piece on agriculture
He is not an expert
I wanted to respond to the article about Bill Gates and “high-tech” farming. [“The world’s hungry need our help,” Opinion, Jan. 25.]
First of all, I think that Gates is a true pioneer in our time for his work in information technologies.
But let’s be reasonable here — you can’t be great in all things. He is not an expert in agriculture in anyway, shape, or form and should leave that field to those who know it.
It has been proven in the last 20-plus years that messing with nature is not a good idea. Between petrochemical fertilizers and genetically modified seeds our planet is feeling the effects as are we.
I don’t know about you but do you remember ever talking to or hearing about people with so many food allergies as there are today? And the root cause is messing around with nature.
Please Gates, if you want to do something good for humanity, develop a means of transportation that doesn’t use oil. Or maybe use your dough to educate people in Third World countries (like I know you already do). Or, teach people to get along and live in harmony, that would save hundreds of thousands of lives each year.
Now, that is a goal I could really get behind. What about it Bill?
