Mount Rainer rescue

This was an act of gross negligence

I am gratified that Yong Chun Kim was found in good condition on Mount Rainier after two nights lost in the snow [“A $6 fire kept lost hiker going,” NWWednesday, Jan. 18]. However, he should pay for the rescue efforts.

To go into the mountains and, in this case, to lead 16 others on a snowshoe hike on Rainier without the 10 essentials is gross negligence. A map and compass would have indicated the correct direction to the tracks of the others and made a potentially dangerous rescue unnecessary.
