Governor outlines drastic state budget cuts

Get priorities straight

It is obvious that the state needs to cut the budget drastically [“Next round of state cuts to leave little untouched,” page one, Oct. 28]. Why should these cuts hurt the poor and sick disproportionately?
Cutting the State’s Basic Health Care Plan and other services for low-income residents is a bad idea. The other day The Times had an editorial against the referendum to increase training for long-term-care workers. You said we can’t afford it.
You hit the nail on the head. Maybe we can’t afford a deep-bore tunnel or replacing the 520 bridge at this time. We could postpone some of these huge projects for a few years and instead take care of the poor, low-income and sick. I’m sure there are a number of other large projects that could be postponed. Let’s get our priorities straight.
