New settlement would divide Palestinians

Posted by Letters editor

Peace process unconvincing

Los Angeles Times reporter Edmund Sanders’ report, titled “New settlement would divide Palestinians” [News, Oct. 15], is based on mistaken assumptions. He assumes the Palestinians are honest partners in a “peace process,” and Israeli settlements are impediments to peace.

Viewed dispassionately, it is clear the Palestinians have never intended to make peace, no matter what borders or incentives are offered. Israel wants peace and security — the Palestinians want Israelis to pack their bags and put their keys under the mat. When understood in these terms, the sad history of the peace process finally makes sense.

Palestinians use the peace process as a tactical deception in a war for public opinion, and they are very good at it. They blame Israel for 63 years of self-inflicted wounds. They demand one concession after another, each time ratcheting the Israelis into a tighter corner.

Israeli settlements might actually serve the cause of peace. By building settlements, Israel is saying, “Make a deal, have your land and your nation. We are a growing nation, our people need to build places to live, and we can’t wait forever for you to decide to live alongside us in peace.”
