$1.5 billion settlement in death of bicyclist

Posted by Letters editor

A toast at client’s expense

Jennifer Sullivan’s article concerning the wrongful-death lawsuit of bicyclist Kevin Black appears to be a rush to settlement, a pittance and a disgrace [“Settlement in bicycle crash,” NWWednesday, June 1].

The value of a young molecular-research scientist’s human life has to far exceed $1.5 million. The estate’s attorney should be taken to the woodshed. I can almost hear Champagne corks popping as he celebrates this victorious win ... at the expense of the client.

This paltry settlement is no victory for the widow and young children. College expenses alone could consume a third of the settlement.

It would be interesting to read in a follow-up article how this amount was agreed upon and whether it passes the smell test of other attorneys.

— Robert E. Morgan, Federal Way
