The World Cup as political science

Posted by Letters editor

A new approach to sports and politics

Editor, The Times:

In Wednesday’s article on the World Cup [“Brazil survives opener,” Sports, June 16], the North Korean team is described as having a “defensive, unflinching style” that “mirrors its rigid government regime.”

So, does the U.S. team have a shifty, unethical style that mirrors its government’s concessions to the environmentally destructive oil industry? Or does the U.S. team have a desperate, homeless style that mirrors the millions of unemployed and the millions of foreclosures?

Golly, it’s a whole new approach to objective sports writing!
