The King County Elections slow pokes
Posted by Letters Editor
What’s the rush?
So sorry The Times editorial board is feeling weird the weekend after Election Day, but I certainly don’t [“Time to speed up pokey ballot count,” Opinion, editorial, Nov. 8].
New York City doesn’t have mandatory vote-by-mail elections. As to Oregon, just because they don’t count mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day doesn’t mean we shouldn’t.
Most Washington voters aren’t interested in helping the [political] junkies and the media get the final election results sooner.
Instead, require ballots arrive no later then the Saturday immediately after Election Day. If the U.S. Postal Service should discontinue Saturday mail delivery, then move the deadline to the Monday immediately after Election Day.
Four business days, after Election Day, will adequately protect those voters who toss their ballot in the mail on Election Day, whether it be foreign or domestic delivery.
—Steven L. Kendall, Seattle
What’s taking so long?
We are dismayed at the fact that vote tallies are being released in dribs and drabs.
It is bad enough that we no longer have the shared, communal act of voting at the polls.
If this remains King County’s choice going forward, we hope King County Elections will find a sense of urgency, and a far more rapid way of counting votes.
—Kate Marrone and Bruce Patt, Seattle
