"Bipolar" headline unfairly adds to stigma

Would The Times have been willing to use an epithet if another disenfranchised and misunderstood group had been involved in this tragic incident? ["Cops: Bipolar man planned kill for 8 a.m." NWThursday, June 4]

"Bipolar man"? How about "diabetic man"? Is a person totally defined by a medical condition?

People struggling with mental illnesses face enough stigma and discrimination without sensationalized headlines linking "bipolar" with senseless violence. The vast majority of people dealing with bipolar disorder pose no threat to anyone.
