ATLANTA — The Hawks acquired guard Jamal Crawford from the Golden State Warriors on Thursday for guards Acie Law and Speedy Claxton, hours before the NBA draft.
Crawford, a Rainier Beach High School product who had his differences with Golden State coach Don Nelson, provides the Hawks with depth and flexibility in the backcourt. Starting point guard Mike Bibby and backup combo guard Flip Murray are both unrestricted free agents after helping Atlanta reach the second round of the playoffs for the first time in a decade.
The deal was completed after Crawford signed paperwork indicating he won't opt out of his contract and become a free agent. He is due to make nearly $20 million the next two years.
Crawford, 29, averaged 19.7 points, 4.4 assists and 3.0 rebounds last season, but he wasn't in the Warriors' plans.
The Hawks like his flexibility, having played both guard positions.
Carter to Orlando
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Vince Carter is going home to Orlando and to the Eastern Conference champion Magic.
The New Jersey Nets dealt the eight-time NBA All-Star, who grew up in Daytona Beach and lives in Orlando, and forward Ryan Anderson to the Magic for point guard Rafer Alston, shooting guard Courtney Lee and power forward Tony Battie.
The trade gives the Magic another star in a lineup that already includes Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis. The deal might also convince Hedo Turkoglu, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent on July 1, to remain with the Magic.
Carter has averaged 23.5 points over a 10-year pro career.
Shaq trade finalized
CLEVELAND — LeBron and Shaq. Teammates.
The Cleveland Cavaliers executed a blockbuster trade to unite the superstars, acquiring Shaquille O'Neal from the Phoenix Suns in hopes he can help LeBron James deliver this seemingly sports-cursed city its first major pro championship in 45 years.
The Cavs sent center Ben Wallace and swingman Sasha Pavlovic to the Suns, along with a second-round pick in the 2010 draft and $500,000 in cash.
