HOUSTON — Hours after arriving home from an important victory in New Orleans, the Houston Rockets awakened to news that forward Carl Landry had been shot overnight near his home.

Landry, 25, suffered a minor wound to his left calf and is expected to miss only one to three weeks. The team said Landry was treated at a hospital and released.

The shooting occurred about 2:30 a.m., a few hours after the Rockets returned from a 95-84 win over the Hornets that kept them in third place in the Western Conference. The team returned to Houston about 12:30 a.m., then started hearing about the shooting in the early morning.

The Rockets practiced in the afternoon, after many had talked to Landry.

"I'm thankful, and I think everyone is thankful, that Carl is safe," forward Shane Battier said. "It's a scary situation. I don't know the details and I'm not going to speculate on them. The most important thing is that Carl is safe and he's OK."

Houston police said Landry was driving his sport-utility vehicle southbound on a city street, when a northbound car swerved into his path and collided with his vehicle. Landry and the driver of the other vehicle made U-turns and the vehicles collided again and Landry's SUV hit a utility pole.

Police spokesman Kese Smith said Landry got out of his SUV to inspect the damage, and was shot by one of the two occupants of the car. The suspects then fled the scene, while Landry ran to get help, police said.

Notes

• It might be the next big thing in online social networking, but Milwaukee Bucks coach Scott Skiles isn't a big fan of Twitter.

At least not when one of his players is posting from the Bucks' locker room during halftime of a critical game.

Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva got a talking-to from Skiles after the coach learned Villanueva posted a message to his Twitter feed — a "tweet" — from his mobile phone during halftime of Sunday's home victory over Boston.

"We made a point to Charlie and the team that it's nothing we ever want to happen again," Skiles said after practice Tuesday. "You know, [we] don't want to blow it out of proportion. But anything that gives the impression that we're not serious and focused at all times is not the correct way we want to go about our business."

Using the screen name "CV31" — Villanueva's initials and jersey number — Villanueva posted the following message during halftime Sunday:

"In da locker room, snuck to post my twitt. We're playing the Celtics, tie ball game at da half. Coach wants more toughness. I gotta step up."

LeBron James dropped a long three-pointer with 47.4 seconds left and added two free throws with 8.7 seconds to go as Cleveland improved to 30-1 at home with a 97-93 win over Orlando.

• San Antonio forward Tim Duncan sat out against Minnesota to rest his knees that have sporadically troubled the veteran All-Star this season.

Coming off a loss Monday night at Oklahoma City, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said he wanted to limit the number of back-to-back games Duncan plays down the stretch. But he said his big man wanted to play.

• New Jersey Nets All-Star guard Devin Harris will be sidelined indefinitely with a sprained left shoulder and strained deltoid muscle. The Nets say an MRI showed no broken bones.

• Dallas swingman Josh Howard will be out at least another week because of an injured left ankle that may need surgery.
