NBA | Spurs re-sign former Sonic Kurt Thomas

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs re-signed Kurt Thomas on Tuesday, getting the veteran forward-center under contract after trading for him in February.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said the 35-year-old Thomas will be with the team at least two seasons.

"He was a big part of a team that went to the Western Conference finals [last season], and if we're going to pursue the championship Kurt will continue to be a big part of that," Buford said. "I don't know how long his career will go, but at least we know the next couple of years are going to be with us."

After being acquired from the Sonics in a trade-deadline deal, the 6-foot-9 Thomas averaged 4.5 points and 4.9 rebounds for the Spurs in 28 games. He appeared in all 17 playoff games for San Antonio, averaging 4.1 points and 4.9 rebounds.

To get Thomas, who is playing for his sixth team, the Spurs sent Brent Barry and Francisco Elson to Seattle. Barry has since signed with the Houston Rockets.

James sprains ankle

LAS VEGAS — As Team USA's practice ended, Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James reclined on a table with trainers tending to his sprained right ankle.

Team officials described the injury as minor. It occurred when James landed on ex-Sonic Kevin Durant's foot during a closed scrimmage between Team USA and a select squad of young pros that includes Oklahoma City's Durant.

U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke said he would know more today and added, "He [James] thinks it's a mild sprain. Our trainers think it's a mild sprain."

The U.S. team is preparing for next month's Olympics in Beijing.

• The Golden State Warriors acquired Marcus Williams from the New Jersey Nets, filling their need for a backup point guard.

The Warriors, who lost Baron Davis to the Los Angeles Clippers via free agency, traded a conditional first-round draft choice to the Nets for Williams, a first-round pick in 2006.

Williams, 22, averaged 5.9 points and 2.6 assists in 53 games with the Nets last season after missing the first 23 games with a broken right foot.

• Point guard Sebastian Telfair, 23, reached agreement on a multiyear deal to return to Minnesota. The unrestricted free agent agreed to return for a second season with the Timberwolves, who acquired him from Boston in the Kevin Garnett trade last summer and gave him his biggest chance to prove he belongs in the league.

Telfair averaged a career-high 32.2 minutes and 5.9 assists per game to go along with 9.3 points and 1.85 turnovers last season.
