WASHINGTON — Antawn Jamison is back in the Washington Wizards' fold, meaning it is time for the franchise to focus on guard Gilbert Arenas.
The Wizards achieved a major free-agency goal Monday when two-time All-Star forward Jamison signed a four-year, $50 million contract.
Jamison, 32, averaged 21.4 points and 10.2 rebounds last season.
The Jamison deal does more than retain the team's co-captain: It might entice the 26-year-old Arenas, who had said he would not return unless the Wizards also kept his friend.
"He said he'd take less money if they got me, and they got me," Jamison said.
Davis, Brand opt out
High-profile players opting out of the final season of their contracts to become unrestricted free agents included guard Baron Davis of the Golden State Warriors and forwards Elton Brand and Corey Maggette of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Davis, 29, was to make $17.8 million for the 2008-09 season. The Los Angeles Times reported Brand, 29, was to make $16.44 million next season and Maggette, 28, was to make $7 million.
Brand said his intention is to re-sign with the Clippers. The two-time All-Star was limited to eight games last season because he was recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Notes
• Teams can negotiate with free agents starting today, though they cannot officially sign anyone until July 9.
Andre Iguodala, Josh Smith and Emeka Okafor top the list of restricted free agents, whose current teams can match any offer made by another club.
The Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Philadelphia 76ers are among the teams with significant salary-cap space, but the Clippers and Grizzlies have a history of being frugal.
• The Los Angeles Lakers have given qualifying offers to two restricted free agents, former Gonzaga standout Ronny Turiaf and Sasha Vujacic.
