NBA Notes: Brown will coach Knicks next season

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — Forget the health concerns, the 59 losses or the feud with Stephon Marbury: Larry Brown is back next season.

That's what Brown and team president Isiah Thomas said Thursday, one day after the New York Knicks completed one of the worst seasons in their history.

Brown also said the flu, not acid reflux, caused him to miss three games, though he also was suffering from the latter condition.

"I got the flu and some people thought it was worse than that, so [Dr.] Lisa [Callahan, team director of player care] was being cautious and told me to stay away," Brown said.

Notes

Pat Riley announced through a spokesman he'll return as Heat coach for the 2006-07 season.

Riley returned to the team after spending four days in upstate New York, tending to his ailing mother.

• Minnesota Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune on Wednesday that his team is interested in acquiring Knicks guard Stephon Marbury, whom Minnesota drafted 10 years ago.

• The NBA set an attendance record for the second straight year, announcing Thursday that it averaged 17,558 fans for its games this season. The league does not release individual team totals, but according to ESPN.com, Seattle was 23rd at a little more than 16,198.
