Former Sonics star Shawn Kemp pleaded guilty to attempted possession of more than 40 grams of marijuana in King County District Court on Wednesday morning.
Kemp pleaded guilty after the county prosecutors' office amended the original charge from a felony to a gross misdemeanor. Because his criminal history contained only traffic violations, Kemp was treated the same as any other first-time offender.
His sentence is deferred one year and will be dismissed if Kemp does not engage in any criminal activity or use or possess any controlled substance. Kemp also has to report by Monday to receive an electronic home-monitoring system. He will spend five days at home monitored by the device and pay $440 in court costs.
Kemp has maintained that marijuana in his truck April 4 was his friend's, Gavin Jones. Jones pleaded guilty to the same charge as Kemp on Wednesday, along with another gross misdemeanor for attempted possession of cocaine. They received the same sentence.
"Even though I did not intend to do anything illegal," Kemp said in a statement, "I want to take responsibility for my actions."
