MADRID —

Police are conducting a homicide investigation regarding the death of an American college student in Spain and have detained a suspect.

A police statement released over the weekend said what originally appeared to be an accidental death in an apartment in the Barcelona area is now being treated as a possible homicide.

The detainee in the death of Dartmouth College student Crispin Scott, a native of Seattle, Washington, is a 41-year-old Ecuadorian.

A police official declined on Monday to provide any more details, including how the victim had died.

Scott was found dead in an apartment in a town outside Barcelona on Jan. 7.

The detainee was arrested Tuesday and on Friday a judge ordered him held in custody.
