BRUSSELS —

A new study shows that U.S. policies to integrate migrants score well despite the fierce political debate over migration.

The study ranks US policies to give immigrants equal opportunities ninth among those of 31 countries studied in Europe and North America.

Leading the list are Sweden, Portugal and Canada. At the bottom are Cyprus and Latvia.

The study looks at various indicators, including education, the right of families to reunite and the extent to which migrants are encouraged to participate politically.

The voluminous study was released Sunday by the British Council, a charity specializing in international educational and cultural opportunities, and the Migration Policy Group, a nonprofit European organization.
