Toddler trampled by moose in northern Colorado

A toddler was injured Thursday after being trampled by a moose in north-central Colorado.

The extent of the child's injuries wasn't immediately clear, but the Grand County sheriff's office said he was flown to Children's Hospital in Denver. The child's name and condition weren't released.

Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton said the incident happened at Pine Beach along Shadow Mountain Reservoir near Grand Lake. A female moose ran over the child, who is about 3, and kept running.

It was unclear whether the moose was charging at the child or running for some other reason.

Wildlife officers said several bull moose and a cow moose with two calves had previously been spotted in the area, prompting authorities to post warning signs. Officers looked for the moose with the intention of euthanizing it but didn't find it Thursday afternoon.

A 92-year-old man died in 2006 a few days after he was attacked by a moose in Grand Lake. Hampton said the Division of Wildlife gets reports a couple times year about run ins with moose. Most people aren't injured.

A female moose can weigh at least 600 pounds and a bull moose can weigh up to 1,000 pounds.
