Amanda Knox co-defendant begins appeal in Italy

An appeals trial has opened in Italy for an Ivory Coast man convicted in the slaying of a British student and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The Associated Press

PERUGIA, Italy —

An appeals trial has opened in Italy for an Ivory Coast man convicted in the slaying of a British student and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Rudy Hermann Guede's (GWAY'-days) appeals process began even as the trial continues for Amanda Knox, a Seattle woman and former University of Washington student.

Guede was convicted in a fast-track trial last year of killing Meredith Kercher in November of 2007 during what began as a sex game at the apartment she shared with Knox.

Knox and her ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito (rah-fy-EHL'-ay soh-LEH'-chee-toh) are also being tried for the killing. They deny wrongdoing, and a verdict in their trial is expected next month.
