Catholic sisters under Vatican review want answers

A group representing Roman Catholic sisters in the United States is raising concerns about why the Vatican is investigating them and who is funding the inquiry.

SILVER SPRING, Md. —

A group representing Roman Catholic sisters in the United States is raising concerns about why the Vatican is investigating them and who is funding the inquiry.

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious says in a statement Monday that they want more specifics about the review from Vatican leaders.

The investigation was shrouded in mystery when it was announced earlier this year.

It's shaping up to be a tough look at whether the roughly 59,000 U.S. Catholic sisters have strayed too far from church teachings.

The Vatican recently released a working paper for the inquiry that said it is meant as a constructive review of the quality of life and work of the women's communities.
