Twitter delays upgrade so Iranians don't lose service

Twitter postponed a network upgrade scheduled for Monday night to avoid cutting service to Iranians. They've been using the social-networking site to communicate during violent protests sweeping Tehran in the aftermath of the presidential election.

The upgrade, which is described on Twitter's blog as "critical," will take place today between 2 and 3 p.m. — that's between 1 and 2 a.m. Wednesday in Iran.

Twitter and other social-networking sites, such as Facebook and blogs, proved to be a vital source of communication during the unrest in Iran, especially as officials forced foreign journalists to halt coverage and, in some cases, to leave the country on Tuesday.

Twitter was launched in 2006 as a free, instant micro-blogging tool where users write "tweets" — messages less than 140 characters — and follow the tweets of others.
