Obama welcome's Israeli prime minister's speech

President Barack Obama says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's endorsement of Palestinian independence shows the "possibility we can restart serious talks."

WASHINGTON —

President Barack Obama says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's endorsement of Palestinian independence shows the "possibility we can restart serious talks."

Netanyahu bent to U.S. pressure in a speech Sunday when he backed down on decades of opposition to Palestinian statehood. He invited the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab world to resume peace talks.

Obama welcomed the developments in brief comments at the end of an Oval Office meeting Monday with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

The U.S. president has been pressing for peace talks to resume.
