Judge nixes challenge to Bloomberg term limit law

A federal judge has rejected a challenge to a law allowing New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to run for a third term.

Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK —

A federal judge has rejected a challenge to a law allowing New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to run for a third term.

Judge Charles Sifton said in a ruling issued Tuesday that the plaintiffs' claim that the mayor and second-term City Council members merely want to maintain their hold on power was baseless.

The plaintiffs, including the city's comptroller, public advocate and several council members and citizens, claimed the law extending term limits was unconstitutional without a public vote. It sought to bar the Board of Elections from listing term-limited city officials on ballots in the 2009 elections.

Bloomberg has argued that the city needs him to stay in office and manage its finances through the economic downturn.
