TACOMA — At least 15 horses locked in stalls at a boarding stable southeast of Tacoma perished in a fire that consumed the stable, according to Central Pierce Fire and Rescue officials on the scene.
The two-alarm fire was reported just after 7 p.m. at Eckstein Stables in the 13100 block of Bingham Avenue East in the Summit area.
"There was heavy black smoke coming from every opening of the barn" when the first firefighters arrived on the scene, said Deputy Chief Doug Willis. He said flames burned through the roof, causing parts of the structure to collapse.
The cause of the fire was being investigated. No one was injured.
Willis said the structure had a heat-detector alarm system.
