Texas governor: Stay off Galveston Island

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says no one is allowed on Galveston Island in the aftermath of Ike except emergency personnel.

AUSTIN, Texas —

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says no one is allowed on Galveston Island in the aftermath of Ike except emergency personnel.

Ike made landfall at Galveston as a Category 2 hurricane early Saturday and Perry says the most damage was done in Galveston County and areas to the east.

People who are on Galveston Island can stay but Perry says anyone who leaves won't be allowed back in. Officials are concerned about people who ignored evacuation orders there and elsewhere.

Perry says power is out in Galveston, Harris, Orange, Chambers and Jefferson counties.

Even though Ike has been downgraded to a tropical storm, Perry says it has not left the state and is still doing damage in east Texas.

Emergency crews are arriving in affected areas by land, air and boat.
