Man faces charges for allegedly shooting near UCLA

Prosecutors charged a man with two felonies Tuesday after police found him near the University of California at Los Angeles campus last week with five loaded semiautomatic pistols and thousands of rounds of ammunition, authorities said.

LOS ANGELES —

Prosecutors charged a man with two felonies Tuesday after police found him near the University of California at Los Angeles campus last week with five loaded semiautomatic pistols and thousands of rounds of ammunition, authorities said.

Gene Bush, 52, was charged with shooting at a traffic light and at a university building a block away from UCLA. No one was injured.

After his arrest on Friday, police searched Bush, his van and a storage unit, finding weapons, ammunition and what authorities called an anti-government manifesto.

Bush's bail was recommended at $1 million. He was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. It was not clear if he had retained an attorney. He faces nearly eight years in prison if convicted.

Police said Bush on Friday was carrying the pistols equipped with laser sights and 400 bullets. They said they found another 7,800 rounds of ammunition in his van and 3,000 more in his storage locker.

Police believe Bush, who appeared to be living out of his van and had no criminal history, was acting alone and did not have a specific target.
