Fifth Avenue paving set to begin

Street repaving in downtown Seattle along Fifth Avenue between Marion Street and Denny Way is scheduled to start soon as part of the city's Bridging the Gap transportation levy approved by Seattle voters in the fall of 2006.

Street repaving in downtown Seattle along Fifth Avenue between Marion Street and Denny Way is scheduled to start soon as part of the city's Bridging the Gap transportation levy approved by Seattle voters in the fall of 2006.

The project, expected to start early next month, will replace asphalt pavement, repair concrete or brick beneath it and add new or upgraded curb ramps. But the brick pavers between Pine Street and Olive Way will remain.

Many of the existing drainage grates will be replaced with grates that don't trap bicycle tires.

Seattle's transportation department and the Downtown Seattle Association will host a free forum Wednesday morning to give the public a chance to learn more about the project. The forum will be from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the third-floor Rainier Square Conference Center, 1301 Fifth Ave., next to the Rock Bottom restaurant. Doors will open at 7 a.m.
