Ferry service between Port Townsend and Keystone delayed

Passenger-only ferry service between Port Townsend on the Olympic Peninsula and Keystone on Whidbey Island won't be up and running until Monday at the earliest, Washington State Ferries said today.

The service is intended to replace the Klickitat, one of four Steel Electric class ferry boats pulled from operation this week over concerns about cracks in the hulls.

The state had hoped to start the passenger service by Friday, said Susan Harris, customer information manager for the ferry system. But ferry workers discovered the boat didn't fit well with the dock they planned to use at Port Townsend, she said.

Ferry officials are now looking for another dock where they can moor the ferry, she said.

The car ferries removed from service for inspection were built in 1927 and are the only car ferries that can operate in Keystone's narrow, shallow harbor.
