Just two months after declaring his candidacy for Congress, state Sen. Rodney Tom, D-Bellevue, announced today that he is withdrawing from the race.

Tom was facing a primary election contest against Darcy Burner, who lost against incumbent Republican Rep. Dave Reichert in 2006. Reichert serves in the 8th Congressional District, which represents eastern King and Pierce counties.

Burner is seeking a rematch next year, and her persistent campaigning and aggressive fundraising made it difficult for Tom to gain traction.

"Our fundraising was going great, but Darcy Burner's campaign has been phenomenal," Tom said. "Darcy has over 3,200 contributors, an incredible statement to her broad base of support."

Burner has no previous elected experience, a fact that Reichert hammered on during the 2006 election. Tom and other Democrats wanted to field a candidate who had previously served in office.

But Burner proved too much for Tom's nascent campaign, and Tom was the first to tip his hat.

"Darcy Burner's campaign has proven they have the leadership, strength and momentum to win next November," he said.

Tom said he will personally pay for all the campaign expenses incurred to date so that his contributors will receive a full refund. He plans to continue to serve his term in the state Senate.
