MARCHLAND, Pa. — A Renton man has died in a single-engine plane crash, authorities said.
Robert Charles Smith, 47, was flying home from Penn Valley Airport in Selinsgrove when his recently purchased 1971 Midget Mustang went down in an open field in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County Coroner Michael Baker said.
A resident found the wreckage on Sunday afternoon, but authorities believe the plane crashed Friday, Baker said.
An autopsy found that Smith died from asphyxia due to smoke inhalation and severe thermal burns, Baker said.
A fire caused by the crash destroyed much of the plane's contents, Baker said.
Smith's wife told authorities that her husband said in an e-mail Thursday that he planned to leave Selinsgrove the following morning, Baker said. Records indicate that the plane took off at about 7:30 a.m. Friday.
Smith's wife said her husband was an experienced pilot and was restoring a second airplane at his home, Baker said.
