A Duke University lacrosse player charged with raping a stripper in North Carolina was ordered Tuesday to stand trial in Washington on an unrelated assault charge from last fall. The assault charge against Collin Finnerty, 19, could have been dismissed if he had completed 25 hours of community service and stayed out of trouble, but a Washington judge decided his arrest in the rape case violated that agreement. Finnerty and two friends are accused of punching a man after he told them to "stop calling him gay and other derogatory names," according to court documents. Finnerty remains free pending a July 10 trial in the Washington case. He could get up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000 if convicted of simple assault. Fargo, N.D.
Student held after school-assault threat The FBI is investigating rumors of a possible attack at a northern Minnesota high school where a teen gunman went on a rampage and killed seven people last year. The FBI said Tuesday that it had a juvenile in custody and that the investigation is ongoing. "At the present time, we believe the alleged threat to the Red Lake High School has been neutralized," said Michael Tabman, agent in charge of the FBI's Minneapolis office. In March 2005, Jeff Weise, 16, killed a security guard, a teacher and five other students at the school before killing himself. Earlier, he had killed his grandfather and his grandfather's companion elsewhere on the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Reservation. Washington Warning issued about allergy drug Federal health officials warned parents and doctors Tuesday not to give drugs that contain promethazine hydrochloride to children younger than 2, citing seven cases of death linked to use of the antihistamine.
The drug, also known as promethazine HCl, is sold by Wyeth under the brand name Phenergan as well as in various generic versions. The warning covers all forms of the drug, including syrups, suppositories, tablets and injectable liquids. Parents also should use care in giving the drug to children older than 2, the FDA said. Suffern, N.Y.
3 charged with kidnapping teen Three teenagers were charged Tuesday with kidnapping a 13-year-old girl for cash, forcing her into the trunk of a car and later abandoning her in the vehicle about a mile away. The girl, who wasn't injured, told authorities she didn't recognize her kidnappers, and officials said it wasn't clear why she was targeted. Charged in the kidnapping were Donald Siler, 19, Chantia Marshall, 18, and Siler's 14-year-old brother, all of Spring Valley, N.Y. Donald Siler and Marshall pleaded not guilty Tuesday. No plea was entered for the 14-year-old. All three were jailed without bail. Though ransom was the object, the family of Mara Downes was never contacted, Detective Lt. Brad Weidel said. The kidnappers abandoned the car with Downes locked in the trunk "because the heat was on," he said. Compiled from The Associated Press Copyright © 2006 The Seattle Times Company Most read articles
