Sheriff Don Eslinger said the 15-year-old boy, identified as Christopher David Penley, brought the gun to Milwee Middle School in suburban Orlando in his backpack. Eslinger said two students saw it and one persuaded the other to report it, causing a scuffle. Deputies called to the school isolated the teen in a restroom, and the school was evacuated. When the teen raised the gun at a deputy, he shot the youth, the sheriff said. Penley was on "advanced life support" at a hospital, Eslinger said. Washington Gonzales to testify on covert U.S. spying Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Friday he would testify in a Senate hearing to give the administration's legal justification for a secret domestic-eavesdropping operation approved by President Bush after the Sept. 11 attacks. News last month of the covert spying program sparked an outcry by Democrats and Republicans, with many lawmakers and rights groups questioning whether it violates the U.S. Constitution. Gonzales said he had agreed to testify in hearings next month. Washington Brazilian diet pills spur FDA warning
The pills are sold over the Web as Emagrece Sim, or the Brazilian Diet Pill, and Herbathin, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said. The pills are billed as all-natural but may contain controlled substances normally found only in prescription drugs, such as Librium and Prozac. Their use can lead to serious side effects or injury, the FDA said. The active ingredient in Librium, chlordiazepoxide, can be habit-forming. Washington 2nd suspect arrested in reporter's death A second suspect in the beating death of veteran New York Times reporter David E. Rosenbaum was arrested Friday night and charged with felony murder. The suspect, Percy Jordan Jr., is a cousin of Michael Hamlin, who was arrested Thursday and also was charged with felony murder in Rosenbaum's death. Jordan is to be arraigned today, police said. Rosenbaum, 63, died Sunday, two days after he was beaten and robbed near his home. Hollywood, Fla.As father sleeps, child fatally injured A toddler was killed after his neck got stuck in an electric car window while his father slept in the driver's seat, police said. Thomaris Waite, who would have been 2 next week, and his father, Thomas Waite, 42, were waiting in the car Thursday as the boy's mother and sibling visited a pediatrician. Thomaris leaned his head out a window and hit the switch that raised the glass, pinning his neck between it and the frame, police Capt. Tony Rode said.
