BAGHDAD, Iraq — A U.S. Army helicopter made a forced landing last night under hostile fire in northern Iraq, and one soldier was killed and another injured, the U.S. military said.

The incident occurred in Tal Afar, an insurgent-ridden city 260 miles northwest of Baghdad, the military said. No further details were released.

As of yesterday, at least 1,878 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
