A U.S. Marine en route to Qaim in western Iraq died when his vehicle hit a land mine, the U.S. military said. The Marine's identity was not released.

As of yesterday, at least 1,529 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003. At least 1,160 died as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department.
