U.S. Marine killed south of Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq — An American Marine was killed in action yesterday south of Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

The death occurred in Babil province, part of an area known as the "Triangle of Death" for insurgent attacks on U.S. and Iraqi forces. The military gave no details of the death.

The death brought to at least 1,362 the number of U.S. service members who have died in Iraq since the United States invaded in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,071 died as a result of hostile action.
