BAGHDAD, Iraq — A U.S. Marine was killed in action yesterday during security operations in Anbar province, the area west of Baghdad that includes Fallujah and Ramadi, the Marines announced. No other details were provided.
The death brought to at least 1,329 the number of U.S. service members who have died in Iraq since the United States invaded in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,042 died as a result of hostile action, the Defense Department said. The figures include three military civilians.
The Defense Department yesterday identified the member of the Fort Lewis-based Stryker Brigade who was killed Wednesday in Mosul as Pfc. Oscar Sanchez, 19, of Modesto, Calif.
He was killed when an explosive struck his observation post.
