Insurgents in Iraq have kidnapped more than 160 foreigners, including 12 Americans.

Held

An unidentified American, kidnapped yesterday in Baghdad along with a Nepalese and four Iraqi guards. Two people — an Iraqi guard and an attacker — died in a gunbattle during the abductions.

Aban Elias, 41, Iraqi-American civil engineer from Denver. Seized May 3 while working near Fallujah by a group calling itself the Islamic Rage Brigade.

Killed

Jack Hensley, 48, of Marietta, Ga., a civil engineer for Gulf Services of the United Arab Emirates. Seized Sept. 16 from his home in Baghdad; an Internet message posted Sept. 21 reported his beheading by followers of Jordanian militant Musab Abu al-Zarqawi.

Eugene "Jack" Armstrong, 52, of Hillsdale, Mich. Abducted in Baghdad Sept. 16; video made public Sept. 20 showed his beheading by al-Zarqawi. Kidnapped with Hensley and Armstrong was Briton Kenneth Bigley; he was beheaded.

Nicholas Berg, 26, businessman from West Chester, Pa. Kidnapped in April and beheaded by al-Zarqawi's group.

Missing

U.S. Army Spc. Keith Maupin, 20, of Batavia, Ohio, William Bradley of Chesterfield, N.H., and Timothy Bell of Mobile, Ala. Disappeared April 9 after attack on a fuel convoy. Arab television reported June 29 that Maupin had been killed; the military lists him as missing.

Escaped

Thomas Hamill, 44, a truck driver from Macon, Miss. Escaped May 2 after being wounded in April 9 convoy ambush.

Freed

Paul Taggart, 24, a freelance photographer from Tulsa, Okla., kidnapped in Baghdad on Oct. 10. Freed two days later.

Micah Garen, freelance journalist from New York City. Seized by gunmen Aug. 13. Released after appeal by aides to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Returned

Marine Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun. Failed to report for duty in Iraq on June 20. Videotaped images showed him apparently kidnapped. Emerged unharmed in Lebanon on July 8. Returned to the U.S. Denies having deserted.
