And early today, a car bomb exploded in southern Baghdad, killing a U.S. soldier with the 1st Cavalry Division and at least one Iraqi civilian, the military said. Two other soldiers suffered minor injuries in today's attack. As of yesterday, at least 1,109 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 846 have died as a result of hostile action, according to the Defense Department. The figures include three military civilians. The AP count is three times higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated yesterday morning.
