BERLIN — Germany's defense minister suggested yesterday that his country might one day send troops to Iraq, but Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder played down those remarks and said it would not happen.

Germany strongly opposed the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq and has not sent any troops to Iraq.

However, Defense Minister Peter Struck told reporters at a NATO meeting in Romania that "it is certainly thinkable that there could be a time — perhaps in years — when Germany will become engaged."

Schroeder, however, dismissed speculation that his aide's remarks signaled a shift.

"The German position won't change," he said after meeting in Rome with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.
