BAGHDAD, Iraq — Two U.S. soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division were killed yesterday north of the Iraqi capital, the military said.

One soldier died when the patrol vehicle he was in swerved to avoid an Iraqi truck and overturned near Balad.

The second soldier was killed when a patrol returning from the scene of the accident was attacked with small-arms fire.

As of yesterday, 1,049 members of the U.S. military have died since the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department.

Of those, 799 died as a result of hostile action and 250 died of nonhostile causes. The figures include three military civilians.
