Sunday, September 19, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. 2 U.S. soldiers die in car-bomb attack
BAGHDAD, Iraq Two car-bomb attacks on the highway to Baghdad's international airport killed two U.S. soldiers and wounded 11 yesterday, the military said. The first bomb exploded as a convoy passed near an overpass on the road linking the capital to the airport, wounding three soldiers. Soldiers traveling to the scene of the attack were hit by the second car bomb, which killed two and wounded eight, the military said. The treacherous stretch of road is the site of frequent attacks against U.S. troops and their supply convoys. The deaths brought the death toll among members of the U.S. military to 1,029 since the United States invaded Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 779 died as a result of hostile action.
