FALLUJAH, Iraq — In volatile Anbar Province, a Marine with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force was killed in action yesterday during "security and stability operations," the military reported. The Marine's name was being withheld until relatives could be notified.

Anbar includes the restive cities of Fallujah, Ramadi and Qaim on the Syrian border.

One U.S. soldier was killed and several others were wounded in clashes with Iraqi Shiite militiamen in a Baghdad suburb Monday, the U.S. military said yesterday.

It said three armored vehicles were disabled by insurgents in the mainly Shiite Sadr City suburb, a hotbed for loyalists of radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

As of yesterday, 943 U.S. service members have died since military operations began in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 703 died as a result of hostile action.
